I realised, yet again, that it’s been many months since I sent out a newsletter. A few things happened:
I was a wrong answer on KBC (ignore the line, that was sent by an enthusiastic cousin who thought I might not know my name, the correct answer is Vikram Seth)
I’m delighted to report I’m going to be one of the Clarion West instructors next summer, which is very fancy if you’re in US SFF genrespaces and know what Clarion West is, but if not, look, it’s very fancy okay.
A few TCI updates
…that I’d posted in other spaces but hadn’t made the newsletter:
Gary K Wolfe’s Locus review of The City Inside is both kind and online!
Sorry to see that Lavie Tidhar and Silvia Moreno-Garcia wrapped up their Washington Post column! It was a great source of SFF discovery/analysis, and I've felt v lucky whenever mentioned
TCI also appeared in this wonderful episode of Voyage into Genre
I was on an episode of the Legendarium podcast discussing dystopias and writing across media
On the Narrated podcast, which discusses thee TCI audiobook.
On Arcx with Anjali Alappat
And this very heartwarming review - my first in Bangla, I think - by Soham Guha in Kalpabiswa.
And I think that might be it, as far as TCI updates are concerned! There was a very kind reveiw in Analog magazine but I can’t find it online
In non-TCI things, got to interview Lavie Tidhar in an event hosted by Mysterious Galaxy about his new novel, Neom, and more
And did an Instagram live with Faye D’Souza for Verve.
And Waking Nydra, my story in Lavie’s Best of World SF (2) anthology, got a kind mention in the Sunday Times UK
I’ve been hard at work on the new draft of the new novel, and a Mysterious Bollywood Project that has been happening in fits and starts all through this year. Which is why I completely failed at the at-least-once-a-month plans I’d made in summer.
I’m going to try and figure out a sustainable format for the newsletter, which is something a lot of authors are doing now that Twitter seems to be on fire yet again. I’ve lurched back to Mastodon (samitbasu@mastodon.social) and half-heartedly logged in to Tumblr (samitbasu), but it’ll be a long while before anything arrives that can begin to replace Twitter in my life - it overtook my blog as a primary window to the world many years ago, and has been a huge source of joy, work and connection, so if it does sink into the abyss I will be very sad to see it go. And it’ll be interesting to see what replaces it over the next few years. Maybe it’ll be this newsletter! I’ve also been wondering whether to start a Slack off this newsletter, but not sure yet what its focus would be.
I hope to be writing again soon with some interesting news!
